General International 14-Inch Radial Arm Saw

Radial arm saw is one of the universal woodworking machines. With radial arm saws, a woodworker can cut bevels, miters, straight crosscuts, rabbets and dadoes, form molding. Radial arm saws can even be used as the horizontal drill. Also, radial arm saws can serve as a guide for a router. Despite all of that universality, only a few manufacturers are building them.

The reason of this situation can be sound in one word: cost. A good and quality radial arm saws are quite expensive. Because of that, many woodworkers look on radial arm saws as on some kind of luxury.  Also, they occupied a quite large space in the workshop, and they aren’t very portable. All these factors can prevent the average woodworker from purchasing the radial arm saws for their workshops.

Despite such negative factors, there is the quite little quantity of woodworkers that purchased a radial arm saw and were disappointed with it. The most part of experience woodworkers, used the radial arm saws, in one voice declared that this woodworking tool is invaluable for them and for their workshops.

However, as I already said, the number of different possible operations that can be made with radial arm saws are amazing. And this fact is stronger that all negative ones.

There is a trade-off to all of this universality. For one, the radial arm saws are quite harder to set up cuts on the saw than some other tools. For instance, if you were cutting compound miters with a radial arm saw, you’d be able to set up a compound miter saw much more quickly and consistently. If you were ripping stock with a radial arm saw, a table saw is a much faster setup. However, if you will need to do the first, the second and the third, you`ll have to buy all tree kind of saws. But a radial-arm saw can handle all that tasks with ease, which gives considerable value to its hefty purchase price.

You can learn about the universality of radial arm saw and ways to incorporate this one of the most useful of woodworking tools into the workshop. You may begin to think that a radial-arm saw is a luxury you really can afford!

History Of Radial Arm Saw

Speaking about radial arm saw history we can`t mention DeWALT company. Radial arm saw was invented by DeWALT company and today this company is the main manufacturer of the radial arm saw in the world. The nomenclature of radial arm saws today consist of several models. There are the most progressive radial arm saws for this day.

Company DeWALT, that was founded in 1924 by Raymond DeWalt (THE USA), from the beginning of the existence and to today is the confessed world leader in the production of industrial electro-instruments for woodworking. Today init`s nomenclature of sawing instruments is included bench-type machine-tools; fret-saw, sabre, disk, combined, universal, band and radial arm saws; planes; hand friseurs.

More than 90 years DeWALT company deserved excellent reputation in the area of planning, constructing and producing of reliable technique. In 1923 Raymond DeWalt invented a radial arm saw that during decades exemplifies quality and longevity.

It was beginning of the conquest of high reputation among professionals. Reliability, power, durability, longevity, and exactness became the visiting-card of the trademark of DeWALT. Combination yellow and black colors is the registered color chart of electro-instruments and belonging of DeWALT

Radial arm saws are produced by a company DeWALT and are the most exact and universal instrument from existent models drank. All of them are equipped with adapters for connecting to the vacuum cleaner or system of dust moving. Models with electronic regulation of a number of turns allow cutting not only a tree but also plastic, chipboard,  plywood, aluminum.

Radial Arm Saw Features That You Need To Know

First of all, radial arm saw is intended for transversal sawing, but its universality is very useful to the woodworker. It is possible to saw with a radial arm saw through the length and breadth fibers, to do slants on length and on the width of detail. At some modifications, a radial arm saw can become a polishing or drilling machine – tool. On simple radial arm saw the saw disk and electric motor are envisaged from below the metallic cantilever bracket mounted on a hard column – bar. A bracket can turn and will bend over in relation to a purveyance at the implementation of plants. At the same time corps of the engine are possible to incline with a saw disk for doing difficult or combined slants. The majority, radial arm saw sets on a table (workbench) or have own supporting tables. Some saws can be assembled on the wall by means of corresponding brackets.

The diameter of saw disk. On radial arm saws for home workshops saw disks are usually set by a diameter 250 mm.

The depth of sawing. At majority radial arm saws the maximal depth of sawing is 75 mm.

Turn of the bracket. A bracket can turn to the right and to the left if the lever of clamp for plants is free. Catch-fixing fixes a bracket in the chosen position. The special scale shows the corner of the turn of the bracket.

The inclination of linen. The angle of slope of saw-blade can be set in any limits between vertical and horizontal positions. Choose saws with the quality scale of the angle of slope of linen.

Possibilities of transversal sawing. The maximal width of transversal sawing is determined mainly by the length of the bracket. At saw for home workshops, this size is within the limits of 310-465 mm. For having the opportunity to cut a width to 600 mm, it is necessary to purchase one of the small models radial arm saw for the industrial use.

Possibilities of longitudinal sawing. The width of longitudinal sawing – to the maximal value a 500-650 mm – can be set by moving of engine with a sawing disk along a bracket and his fixing in the set position. The scale inflicted on the length of bracket shows the width of sawing.

Protection of sawing disk. A sawing disk on radial arm saws is closed by a protection that is automatically raised by a purveyance in the process of sawing, and then goes down under own weight, when an operation is closed.

Switch. Switches are usually placed either on the end of bracket or on the main handle of management, where they are accessible. Some saws have devices of including with the keys, that assists prevention of their casual including.

Moving away from sawdust and dustRadial arm saws give much dust and sawdust that retire through the nipple on the protection of linen. It is very desirable to use one of the methods of moving away from sawdust and dust because floor around a saw can become slippery from them.

Radial arm saw is the one of the best tools for big woodworking operations, and it really speeds up large projects. All radial arm saws can be safe when they used properly. Anyone who uses a radial arm saw from any manufacturer needs some basic knowledge of his power-toot if he doesn’t what to hams himself. Here are some basic steps for those who work with radial arm saw and want to avoid some common risks.

First of all, as with all tools, read the instructions for your radial arm saw. Make sure and check one more time that your radial arm saw is set up properly according to your manufacture’s instruction. Just remember that safety of work is the most important part of the work.

When you are cross-cutting with your radial arm saw, you have to set blade depth below the surface of your working table. Please note that if you using your radial arm saw for the first time, you’ll end up cutting some grooves into the table sacrificial table top, so you’ll want to lower the blade to the cutting position after the saws motor is up to speed.

REMEMBER! Never free-hand any word processing with your radial arm saw. Keep in mind always holding the stock right against the saw fence.

Please note, when you are pulling the saw towards you, through the stock, the blade’s rotation will be cutting away from the body. This will help you by turning the sawdust from sawing operations away from the user. But, it also can cause the radial arm saw to lurch forward as it cuts through the stock. By keeping this in the mind, keep a firm grip on the handle of the saw and do not let a saw a chance to determine the speed of cutting. The motion of pulling the radial arm saw toward your body and then holding it back while the saw blade is cutting. These operations will need some time for practice, but you will get the hang of it soon.

It is it for now. Practice will help you to make your work with radial arm saws easier. But remember the most important rule. The safety of work, especially if you are working with such powerful tools like a radial arm saw, is the most important part of the work.

Radial Arm Saw Safety Instructions

  1. Place the motor and yoke fully back against the column so the blade does not feed itself across your material.
  2. You should not crosscut a board that is less than 6 inches long.
  3. A light steady pull is used for cutting. Do not force the cut or you will jam the machine.

While cutting, hold the handle firmly so the saw will not try to climb onto the stock.

  1. Use a slow and firm pull when using dado blades or they will feed themselves into the wood.
  2. The radial arm saw should be used only for cutting across the width of the board. Any other cutting operation must be approved and supervised by the instructor.
  3. Keep your hands from getting into the path of the blade. Your hands should be 4 or more inches away from the path of the blade.
  4. Keep all stock firmly against the fence to prevent the material from being thrown back.
  5. The dust spout should be directed away from the operator.
  6. Each turn of the elevating handle lifts or lowers the blade 1/8 inch.
  7. Raise the blade a minimum of 3 inches above the table before setting the angle of the blade for making bevel cuts.  You must receive instructor’s approval before you start this operation.
  8. Do not cut round stock on the radial arm saw. Round stock may slip and roll into the blade, jamming the machine.
  9. Any operation which requires a special set-up must be approved by the instructor prior to the start of the operation.
  10. Safety guards must be in good working condition and used at all times in order to prevent serious injury to the operator
