Husqvarna stands alongside Stihl as a giant in the chainsaw market.

Despite its over 325 year history, Husqvarna is a relative newcomer to the chainsaw market. It’s first product, the Model A-90 wasn’t introduced until 1959. The saw was well received. Weighing just 25 pounds it had a 90cc engine. It’s key advantage over the competition, however, was its lower noise emission, operating around 10% more quietly than the opposition.

Three years later, Husqvarna beefed up their chainsaw department by acquiring Monark-Crescent, who had been working on a saw powered by an outboard motor engine. Husqvarna used the resultant ‘light’ saw to open a new market – tree limbing.

It didn’t take the company long to put its huge resources of financial reserves and design talent to use in order to catch up for lost time. Husqvarna continued to innovate and, by the mid-1970’s had established itself as a market leader. One way that Husqvarna Chainsaw established dominance was by buying up smaller competitors. In 1978 they were, themselves, acquired by Electrolux, which then went on to eat up a number of other chainsaw manufacturers, including Jonsered, Poulan, and Pioneer.

Today, Husqvarna / Electrolux stand alongside Stihl as a giant in the chainsaw market.

Company Background

Husqvarna logoHusqvarna of Sweden is one of the oldest companies in the world, dating back to 1689. The company was born along the banks of the Humblaruma River, about 150 miles southwest of Stockholm as a manufacturer of firearms. Their competitive advantage was the powerful flow of the water coursing through the nearby Lake Vattern, which powered the company’s house mill or hus kvarna.

Over the course of the first century of operation, firearms production was the sole focus. With the end of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1, Husqvarna switched to the production of shotguns and hunting rifles for the consumer market. By the beginning of the 20th century, the company was capitalizing on new, innovative consumer products, with a range of popular sewing machines, stoves, and bicycles. Kitchen gadgets, refrigerators, and motorcycles rolled out in the early decades of the Twentieth century. The success of their wide-ranging product line turned Husqvarna into a household name and a multinational giant.

In 1997, Husqvarna sold off its iconic sewing machine division to allow it to focus solely on outdoor and construction equipment. In the 21st Century, the company has embraced new technology, with their Autotune chainsaw system and revolutionary battery range.

Husqvarna 460 Rancher 20-Inch

Husqvarna 460 Rancher 20-Inch – One of the Most Popular Husqvarna Chainsaws in Production

From their very first product, the A-90, Husqvarna have pushed the envelope in terms of innovation. Today, discerning consumers have come to expect that a Husqvarna saw will incorporate features that set it apart. Here are four innovations that have become standard on most Husqvarna models:

X-Torq – this patented design allows for lower fuel consumption and reduced exhaust emission levels.

Air Injection – a built-in centrifugal air cleaning system continually clears the engine of debris and dust, preventing air filter degradation. This also means that Husqvarna saws generally require less frequent filter replacements.

Combined choke / stop control – this mechanism makes it easier to start the machine. It also reduces the chances of flooding the engine.

Smart Start – the starter motor design ensures an easy, quick start every time.

Another new innovation of all Husqvarna chainsaws is that they use steel springs for mounts, as opposed to rubber. This makes the mounts less prone to gas and oil damage. Another standard feature allows for ease of chain tension adjustment, allowing this to happen without the need for an extra tool.

Husqvarna’s x-torq system has given it a distinct advantage over their competitors in terms of ease of start and overall power. It’s uniquely optimized fuel pump also ensures that the fuel lines are kept open, further enhancing the ease of start up.

Husqvarna chainsaw’s handling mechanism features low vibration technology which reduces user fatigue. All models include a number of standard features which enhance the machine’s safety. A kickback guard cuts off the machine in the event of kickback. A chain catcher ensures that a broken chain will not make contact with the body of the operator. All models also incorporate a throttle lock, which must be activated for the unit to operate. There is also an emergency stop button which is readily accessible during operation.

Husqvarna Chainsaw has developed a reputation for bringing to market innovative products at great value for the money spent. They offer an extension on the standard domestic two-year warranty to a 5-year domestic warranty, providing excellent peace of mind for their customers.

Husqvarna Drawbacks

Husqvarna 450

The Super Powerful Husqvarna 450 18″ Chainsaw

Some Husqvarna chainsaw models include a plastic chain brake, which is not as sturdy as seen on other brands. The use of plastic on such other parts as the gas cap also make some Husqvarna models less sturdy than competitor brands. In addition, access to the air filter on some models requires the use of a screw driver, making it more difficult to clean.

Unlike most Stihl models, Husqvarna does not have a built-in self-lubricating feature, meaning that the operator will have to stop working to lubricate the machine.

Husqvarna has a great range of lightweight saws that are ideal for tree limbing and other light yard work. You’ll recall that Husqvarna innovated the light chainsaw way back in the early 1960’s. They also boast an impressive array of gas powered units. However, their range of electric saws is less impressive. Their battery powered saws utilize an innovative patented battery design to prolong performance life.

The superior power to weight ratio of Husqvarna models makes it a popular choice among home and farm users. Husqvarna chainsaws are also the great option for people who are experienced chainsaw users and who will be using their saw frequently. For heavy users, the best models to consider are the 400 range – in particular, the 450 and 460 rancher.
