Poulan Chainsaw Reviews

Poulan’s first chainsaw, the two-man Model 2400 hit the market in 1946. For more than a year previous to this, Claude Poulan had been manufacturing a bow guide saw. The 2400 utilized a generator engine and a chain that was attached to the bow attachment of his previous saw. The early Poulan saws used Homelite power and featured a narrow cutting bow to reduce pinching and binding.

In 1953, Poulan introduced the very first Poulan chainsaw that could be operated by a single person, the Model A. Next off the assembly line was the B100 Gear Drive. This machine proved to be faster and offered more flexibility of use than the Model A. It was with this saw that Poulan became a big player in the chainsaw market.

In the mid-1970’s, Poulan brought to market the amazing Model XX. This saw, which broke the $100 price barrier, was to establish itself as the industry standard for light-weight home user chainsaws.

Today, Poulan remains as one of the largest chainsaw manufacturers in the world, experiencing the greatest growth of any company in the last 10 years.

Background of Company

Poulan logoIn 1944, Claude Poulan was a 29-year-old lumberjack working the pine forests of East Texas. Being as it was the Second Wortd War, Poulan’s job involved supervising German POW’s as they logged pulpwood from hardwood and loblolly pine forests. He observed that the German workers were industrious and efficient laborers but noted that they were hampered by the inefficiency of their two-man bucking saw. In fact, it required a third man to use a pry bar to get the logs in place for bucking into short lengths. The bar was also prone to binding when the log moved. Poulan knew that he could devise a more efficient saw for the job.

He was right. From his first working model of a one-man bow saw, which he constructed from a throw away Chevvy truck fender, Poulan showed a real knack for innovation and technical noise. At war’s end, Poulan quit his job with International Paper and ventured out on his own. From a small workshop in Marshall, Texas, Poulan and his wife Gertrude began filling orders for his bow guide saw. The business soon grew, necessitating a move to Shreveport, Lousiana. During this time, Claude was also working on his prototype chainsaw.

The first Poulan chainsaw hit the market in 1946, proving to be a popular seller. Poulan’s third manufacturing plant move saw him operating out of a 55,000 square foot factory in Shreveport. With the aid of his two brothers, Poulan developed an assembly line for the saws. By 1951, Poulan was producing 11 models of chainsaw and had a sales force that spread across the entire United States.

In 1959, Poulan chainsaw manufacturing, along with its subsidiary Poulan Saw Company, was purchased by Charles T. Beaird of the metal manufacturing J.B.Beaird Company. The new company was known as the Beaid-Poulan Saw Company. The extra investment that was then injected saw the company double in size. Poulan chainsaw was now among the top chainsaw manufacturers in the world.

In 1973, Beaird-Poulan was taken over by Emerson Electric. It was subsequently merged with Weed Eater. For five years, the company operated as Poulan / Weed Eater. Then, in 1978, it was consumed by Electrolux as just one of several home improvement manufacturer buy ups by that multi-national giant. As part of the Electrolux group of companies, Poulan chainsaw is still a well respected and powerful name on the chainsaw landscape.
